Byron
Fidetzis was born in Thessaloniki and completed the first cycle of
his musical education at the State Conservatory (cello and
advanced theory). A state scholarship led him to Vienna and Detmold for
further studies in conducting under H. Swarowsky, O. Suitner and
Miltiadis Caridis and in the cello under V. Orlof, A. Navara and S.
Benes. He graduated from the Vienna Academy with a Diploma in
Cello and in Conducting. He
has played as cellist and conducted all Greek Symphony Orchestras
in regular concerts and in all the Greek festivals. He has also appeared
in Austria, Egypt, Bulgaria, Brazil, Germany, Yugoslavia, Italy, Cyprus,
Poland, Turkey and Chechoslovakia). He
conducts regularly at the National Opera and was its first permanent
conductor between 1985 and 1992.
Since 1987 he has been a permanent conductor of the Athens State
Orchestra. From 1990 to 1992 he was the chief conductor of the State
Symphony Orchestra of Ekaterinbourg in Russia. In 1990 he took charge of
the Pazartzik Symphonic Orchestra as guest conductor and since 1992 he
has been guest conductor of the "Cappela Russia" in Moscow.
Byron Fidetzis has recorded more than thirty LPs and CDs with works of
Greek composers. The
Academy of Athens honoured Byron Fidetzis with the "Spiros
Motsenigos" prize for his artistic achievements. He has also
received awards from the Bank of Greece and the Thessaloniki
International Trade Fair. His contribution to the performance and
promotion of Greek music was acknowledged by his unanimous election as a
honorary member of the Union of Greek Composers. From 1991 to 1993 he taught at the Music Department of the University of Athens and since 1996 he has been teaching at the Ionian University. He also taught the violoncello at the Athens Conservatory between 1994 and 1998. He
was a founding member of the Manolis Kalomiris Society and has recorded
all Kalomiris symphonies and many other works. He was elected Chairman
of the Board in 1997 and a member of the Artistic Committee of the Samos
Kalomiris Festival.. |
